We spend one-third of our lives sleeping. Sleeping is one of the most important activities and should be taken seriously. Undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorders can cause serious problems such as difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, loss of energy, fatigue, lethargy, and emotional instability. These problems may have serious consequences, such as sleepy driving or workplace accidents and errors. Of the more than 70 known sleep disorders, the most common are obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome. Large numbers of individuals suffering from these sleep disorders are unaware of their disorder and cannot get any treatment. Therefore, it is essential to track and improve the quality of sleep. This project involves the design and development of a smart sleep quality monitoring system that includes ambient and wearable sensors. The sensor data is gathered from the ambient and/or wearable sensors (i.e. accelerometers, force sensors, humidity, sound, light levels), analyzed and the results are transferred to the user's mobile phone in order to give feedback and increase self awareness.
