Topology

Current network topology includes a number of 100 Mbps Ethernet LANs, a 155Mbps ATM network, a number of WAN connections to the Turkish and US Internet. Moreover, a secure Mobile Applications and Services testbed (MAST) is available for the researchers. MAST includes 10 Wireless Access Points, Wi-Fi capable PDAs, GSM/GPRS capable PDAs, approximately 20 notebook computers with Wi-Fi cards, and the necessary servers such as, Mobile IP  agents, DHCP servers, RADIUS security servers.

Network Research Laboratory (NetLab) of the Department of Computer Engineering, together with the other local area networks of the department are connected to the backbone router of the Bogazici University through an  Ethernet switch and IP router. Internet connection is currently achieved through two connections managed by the Computer Center of the university. An  IP connection exists to TUBITAK/ULAKNET, the academic IP network of Turkish universities, and through ULAKNET to Internet. The university separately maintains another IP connection over a satellite directly to US Internet. There are currently no direct European Internet connections.

Current Infrastructure

NetLab  is housed in 8 faculty and research assistant offices, two server rooms and a laboratory within the building of the Department of Computer Engineering. The total space occupied is approximately 300 sq.m.

There are approximately 50 computers, including several SUN workstations, LINUX and Windows servers and high-end PC's, interconnected through a 100 Mbps Ethernet network. Several printers and a photocopier exist to support paper production. 4 modems exist to support dial-in access. All computers and communication devices have 24 hour UPS power, which is also backed up by the emergency electricity generating plant of the university.

One HP LAN analyser, one HP WAN analyser; one 100MHz oscilloscope, one 100MHz logic analyser and several other instruments are available for measurement studies. NetLab has a small electronic workshop for board development and testing, and also 680xx development .

The software available at NetLab includes SOLARIS, UNIX, VMExec, LINUX, Windows XP operating systems, all common compilers and assemblers, PC software such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases, OPNET modelling and simulation software package, network management softwares, several public network simulation and analysis tools.
